A diver has a very personal moment of dejection at the bottom of the pool during the 2012 CCCA Swimming and Diving State Championships at East Los Angeles College Swim Stadium on Thursday, April 26, 2012 in Monterey Park, CA. (Photo by Suzanne Tylander © 2012) This particular photo represents an emotional moment rarely caught underwater. This particular diver was expected to win the entire event. The diver knew as soon as he hit the water his form was flawed and that he might have just lost it all. I was fortunate enough to witness this moment as it was unfolding underwater. I captured the sequence of emotion just a split second after he hit the water and began to sink to the bottom with a sense of defeat written in his body language. This was the image I chose from the series. I have felt this emotion and disappointment before as many athletes do. My chance to capture it underwater was rare but beautiful. It is a moment no competitive athlete wants to relive but something important that many of us can relate to. It is raw and human and real.

Wow.

Prom, just so you know!

So lately I’ve been getting a lot of ignorant questions and assumptions from people referring to the decision I’ve made of choosing my prom date. I get a lot of questions like ” Did you really wanna go with him? or ” You’re going to say no right?” and let me just answer this question again, YES I MADE A GREAT DECISION OF SAYING YES TO MY PROM DATE AND NO BECAUSE HE’S PERFECT. This year I’ve decided to go to prom with a guy who has been constantly encouraging me and who has helped me out a lot throughout high school and by going to prom with him I’ll hope it will show my gratitude towards him because I’m planning to be a fun prom date as well. But of course, people will have their opinion, and lately I’ve been getting a lot of negative comments and a lot of why’s so let me answer your guy’s question: because I don’t care about this social life level thing where people put each other on a pedestal. It’s time for people to realize that “popularity” in high school will not be eternal, you know why? Because everyone will be dispersing and fighting for their own battles for reaching their goals, and I absolutely believe that people, especially like my prom date who’s kept themselves in the low light by focusing in school, will become one of those successful people whose success will lasts for years instead of four measly years being known in a high school where people themselves don’t even know who they are. So I won’t let people’s opinions destroy me or my decision because I know that years from now I’ll be the lucky one. Prom will be one of those memorable nights for me, I know I’ll be able to say that I went to prom with one of the smartest guy who’s probably going to be famous someday. One more reason, although I don’t have any feelings for my prom date, I do want him to know and other gentlemen out there to know that your kindness and selflessness is recognized and there’s no doubt that guys like you will have someone very beautiful and amazing to fall in love with you for all the sweet things you guys do for people so don’t stop being generous and offering your help to other people! Thank you to all the sweethearts out there who remain genuine and kind. I wish I could go to prom with all you guys cause that would make my night! But for now lets just hope I look pretty for my one date! I don’t want to embarrass my him -__- hahaha!
